Parmesan Roasted Green Beans | Easy Garlic Green Bean Side Dish
Famous Green Beans (Parmesan Roasted Green Beans Side Dish)
If you’ve been In Jamie’s Kitchen for a while, you already know I love a good shortcut recipe that still tastes homemade. These Famous Green Beans are exactly that. They’ve made their way into more dinner rotations and holiday tables than I can count, and once you make them, you’ll see why.
It’s the perfect combination of easy ingredients, minimal prep, and maximum flavor. You’ll take one bite and immediately understand why people keep asking for “that green bean recipe.”
Why These Green Beans Are So Popular
What makes this recipe stand out from all the other green bean sides out there? It’s the flavor-to-effort ratio.
- Only a few ingredients you probably already have on hand.
- A hands-off method that lets the oven do the work.
- That irresistible mix of garlic, olive oil, and parmesan that caramelizes just enough to give each bite a little crunch and a lot of flavor.
It’s simple enough for a weeknight dinner, but tasty enough to serve at Thanksgiving, Easter, or any big family gathering.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Here’s everything you need for these parmesan roasted green beans:
- 1 (16 oz) bag of fine green beans (frozen)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt, to taste
- ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
That’s it. You can use fresh green beans if you prefer, but the frozen fine-cut variety gives you great results with zero prep work.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
2. Assemble the Ingredients
Add frozen green beans to a baking dish. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder and salt.
3. Toss to Coat
Stir everything until the beans are evenly coated.
4. Bake
Bake for 35 minutes, or until the beans are tender and starting to brown around the edges.
5. Add Parmesan
Remove from the oven, sprinkle parmesan cheese on top, and toss gently to melt and coat the beans.
6. Serve warm and watch them disappear.
Why Oven-Roasted Green Beans Taste So Good
Roasting vegetables in the oven brings out their natural sweetness. The olive oil helps them brown slightly, and the parmesan creates that golden, cheesy coating everyone loves.
If you’ve only ever had steamed green beans, you’re in for a treat. These have a bit of crispiness and a deep, savory flavor that makes them the perfect side dish for any meal.

Tips and Easy Variations
Once you’ve made the basic version, try these simple twists to change it up:
- Fresh beans: If you’re using fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water for 2–3 minutes first. Drain well, then roast for about 20–25 minutes.
- Crispier texture: For extra crisp edges, bake a few minutes longer or switch the oven to broil at the end. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.
- Add lemon: A squeeze of lemon juice or a sprinkle of zest before serving brightens up the whole dish.
- Make it spicy: Add crushed red pepper flakes or a dash of Cajun seasoning for a little kick.
- Try another cheese: Parmesan is classic, but pecorino or asiago are great too.
- Bacon version: Crumble a few slices of cooked bacon on top before serving for a smoky flavor boost.
FAQs
Can I use fresh green beans instead of frozen?
Yes! Just adjust the cook time. Fresh beans need less oven time, so start checking them around 20 minutes.
What does “fine” green beans mean?
Fine-cut beans are thinner than standard green beans. They roast faster and get a better texture. Look for “thin” on the package.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes. You can prep and bake them a few hours before serving, then reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes.
Is it okay to use the parmesan that comes in a shaker bottle?
Absolutely. Freshly grated cheese melts better, but the pre-grated kind still adds great flavor.
Can I double or triple this recipe?
Definitely. Just use a larger baking dish or two separate pans so the beans aren’t crowded. They roast best in a single layer.
How do I keep my green beans from getting soggy?
Spread them out in the pan so they can roast instead of steam. Make sure to use just enough olive oil to coat, not drown them.
Serving Ideas
These green beans go with almost anything. Try pairing them with:
- Grilled or baked chicken
- Pork tenderloin
- Steak or roast beef
- Turkey and mashed potatoes at the holidays
- Salmon or other fish for a lighter meal
They’re also great with pasta or rice bowls when you want to add an easy vegetable that feels special.
Why This Recipe Works Every Time
The secret is in the balance of ingredients. The olive oil keeps the beans from drying out, the garlic adds depth, and the parmesan gives that perfect salty crunch. It’s the kind of side dish that makes everyone at the table ask for the recipe – which is probably why these became famous in the first place.
You can make them year-round, straight from the freezer, and they’ll still taste like something you put effort into.
Final Thoughts
If you need a reliable, delicious side dish that’s ready in under 40 minutes and never fails to impress, bookmark this one. These Parmesan Roasted Green Beans are one of those recipes that prove simple really is better.
Make them once, and I bet you’ll end up calling them your “famous” green beans too.

How long for non frozen green beans?
Surprised you use pregrated parmesan cheese in a shaker can! Easier, but really?
Yes, really. When I first started making this I was a young, single mom and didn’t have much money. We grew to love the recipe with the shaker cheese and that’s the way we still make it now. You can certainly make it your way.
It probably would be better because I used fresh and if the beans are too hot, they get gummy from the cheese
So good and so easy and a hit at our house. The only thing I did diffently was nuke the beans in the bag for a few minutes to shorten cooking time and because I am bougie, I used the pregrated parm in the smaller container from the dairy section as opposed to the one with the green top that we all grew up with.
What defines “fine” green beans? Would the cook time be different using fresh (not frozen) beans? Thank you!
I buy the bag that actually says, “fine green beans.” I’m sure using a different type will change the cook time so best to keep an eye on them.
I absolutely love these green beans. Thank you so much for your recipe and tutorial. Maybe 🤔 I’m a snob but I want real grated Parmesan. Please don’t hate, just my strong opinion. 🤣😘🥳
These are delicious! I purchased a bag of “fine green beans,” too, and the time was just right! I left off the Parmesan cheese as I needed a lactose-free recipe for my daughter-in-law, but I want to make them with again and use the Parmesan!
Add a heavy splash of Soy Sauce. Takes it over the top.
I tried the recipe tonight and we really liked it!
