Crockpot Hot Chocolate Recipe (Rich & Creamy)

Best Crockpot Hot Chocolate Recipe

Snuggle up and make a cool, crisp night feel like a cozy hug. This crockpot hot chocolate recipe is rich, creamy, and full of chocolate flavor, with both cocoa powder and semisweet chocolate chips in every batch. Add whipped cream, marshmallows, or a few of your favorite toppings, and it feels like a true dessert.

We usually reach for Swiss Miss when we want a quick, single cup of hot cocoa. But when I’m making hot chocolate for a crowd, this homemade slow cooker version is the way to go. It makes a big batch, stays warm for serving, and is much richer than instant cocoa.

One of our favorite traditions is making a batch on Christmas Eve, filling our to-go cups, and driving around to look at Christmas lights. It’s also perfect for a winter movie night, friends coming over, or a chilly weekend at home. Sometimes I set out toppings for a hot cocoa bar and let everyone finish their own cup.

Why You’ll Love This Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate

  • Rich and creamy: Milk, heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, and melted chocolate give it a deliciously creamy texture.
  • Easy to make: A little whisking and occasional stirring are all it takes while the slow cooker does the heating.
  • Great for a crowd: Make one big batch instead of preparing individual mugs.
  • Easy to customize: Everyone can choose their own toppings or mix-ins.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder: Adds deep chocolate flavor alongside the chocolate chips.
  • 1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk: Sweetens the hot chocolate and adds richness. Be sure to use sweetened condensed milk, rather than evaporated milk.
  • 1½ cups heavy cream: Gives the hot chocolate its creamy, dessert-like texture.
  • 6 cups milk: Whole milk makes an especially rich batch; use the milk you normally enjoy.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt: Balances the sweetness.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract: Adds flavor to the chocolate base.
  • 1 (10-ounce) bag semisweet chocolate chips: Melts into the milk mixture for an extra chocolatey cup.

Toppings are optional, but they’re part of the fun! Keep them separate from the batch so everyone can customize their mug.

What You’ll Need to Make and Serve It

You’ll need a slow cooker with enough room for the full batch and space to stir, a whisk, and a ladle. A 6-quart slow cooker gives you plenty of room.

I like serving this in cute mugs at home. For our Christmas Eve drive, we use cups with lids made for hot drinks so we can take our cocoa along.

Step One: Whisk the Cocoa Into Some of the Milk

Add the cocoa powder and about 1 cup of the measured milk to the slow cooker. Whisk until the cocoa is well combined, breaking up any lumps. Starting with a smaller amount of milk makes it easier to blend the powder.

Step Two: Add the Remaining Ingredients

Pour in the remaining 5 cups of milk, sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, salt, and vanilla. Stir to combine, then add the semisweet chocolate chips.

The chips will still be visible at this point. They’ll melt as the hot chocolate warms.

Step Three: Cook on LOW and Stir Occasionally

Cover and cook on LOW for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally. As you stir, sweep along the bottom and sides to help the chocolate melt evenly and keep it from sticking.

The hot chocolate is ready when the chips have melted, the mixture is smooth, and it’s hot throughout. Slow cookers can heat differently, so use those signs along with the cooking time.

Step Four: Switch to WARM

Give the hot chocolate a final stir or whisk, then switch the slow cooker to WARM for serving. Stir occasionally while serving to keep the mixture smooth.

Step Five: Ladle Into Mugs and Add Toppings

Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs or cups designed for hot drinks. Finish with whipped cream, marshmallows, or your favorite toppings.

This hot chocolate is rich, so a smaller mug with a few toppings makes a satisfying dessert.

Topping and Mix-In Ideas

You can keep it simple with marshmallows or dress up your cup with a few extras:

  • Mini marshmallows: A classic topping that gets soft and melty.
  • Whipped cream: Adds a fluffy finish.
  • Crushed peppermint: Gives your cup a minty twist.
  • Chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips: For an extra chocolatey topping.
  • Chocolate or caramel sauce: Drizzle over the whipped cream or stir a little into your cup.
  • Sprinkles or M&Ms: Fun options when everyone is choosing their own toppings.
  • Rolled wafer cookies or cookie sticks: Serve alongside the mug for dipping.
  • A pinch of cinnamon: Stir into an individual cup for a warm flavor.

I recommend adding mix-ins to individual mugs so the whole batch keeps its original chocolate flavor. For peppermint extract, start with a tiny drop—it’s much stronger than crushed peppermint.

Tips for Rich, Creamy Hot Chocolate

Use LOW for cooking. Gentle heating helps the chocolate melt into the dairy mixture. Avoid letting it boil.

Remember to stir. Stir along the bottom and sides as the chocolate melts, then give the batch another stir before ladling it into mugs.

Keep toppings separate. Add whipped cream, marshmallows, and other toppings to each cup when serving.

Adjust individual cups if needed. If you prefer a lighter drink, stir a little warm milk into your mug.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Hot Chocolate

Store the leftover hot chocolate without toppings. Divide it into smaller, shallow containers and refrigerate promptly, within 2 hours of taking it off the heat. You don’t need to wait for the whole batch to cool to room temperature.

Cover and keep refrigerated for up to 3–4 days.

To reheat, pour the amount you want into a saucepan and warm gently over low to medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until it reaches 165°F. Avoid boiling. You can also microwave an individual portion in a microwave-safe mug in short intervals, stirring between each, until it reaches 165°F.

The chocolate may settle or the cocoa may thicken in the refrigerator. Stir or whisk as it warms, and add a splash of milk if needed. Add fresh toppings after reheating.

Notes

  • Milk: I use 2% milk. Whole or skim milk can also be used; the richness will vary. Nondairy milk has not been tested, and the heavy cream and condensed milk still contain dairy.
  • Toppings: Add toppings and flavored mix-ins to individual mugs so everyone can customize their cup.
  • Leftovers: Divide into smaller, shallow containers and refrigerate within 2 hours of removing from heat. Cover and use within 3–4 days.
  • Reheating: Warm on the stovetop, stirring frequently, or microwave individual portions in short intervals, stirring between each. Reheat to 165°F without boiling. Add a splash of milk if needed and finish with fresh toppings.
